Body of seven year-old boy found in donga

MAPEKERENG – Members of the community of Mapekereng in Moutse outside Groblersdal within the Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality are still reeling shock following the discovery of a body of a seven year-old boy in a water filled donga recently.

The residents said the recent unfortunate incident brought to the attention of the community and authorities that something needed to be done about the dongas to prevent further calamities.

The dongas in the area have recently been filled with water from heavy downpours and children dangerously regard them as playing grounds.

The body of a seven year-old boy from Phuqukani Village near Mapekereng in Dennilton, who was reported missing the previous day, was found the following day in a muddy donga in the area to the shock of the village.

It is alleged that the seven year-old boy went out to play with friends and they later decided to go swimming in the donga.

With the recent heavy downpours, parents are urged to monitor the movements of their children as they end up playing in dangerous places.

Seun Mogotji, a community leader called on relevant authorities within Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality to take responsibility and rehabilitate the dangerous dongas and burrow pits to prevent more loss of life.

Police have in the past issued statements warning children in Moutse against playing at such dangerous spots.

This after a number of cases of children’s drownings were reported from such spots that they saw fit to play at, especially swimming.
