Multimillion rands skills development centre officially unveiled
AQUAVILLE – R131 million of the R141 million funded by W&R SETA towards the skills development centre of Sekhukhune TVET College in Aquaville outside Groblersdal will be used for the construction of the centre while R9 million will be used for the capacitation of the informal traders relocation.
The R9 million will also be used for construction of trading stalls for 45 informal traders operating in the surrounding area of the centre and further, R6.9 million will be for the construction of the access road to the centre.
This was revealed during the official sod turning ceremony of the skills development centre by Higher Education and Training, Science and Innovation Minister, Dr Blade Nzimande on 21 October in Aquaville.
Minister Nzimande indicated that when completed, the facility would comprise of an administration building, retail business hub, engineering and related workshops fully equipped for technical training and retail and agricultural hub for training, ware housing, agro-processing and retailing.
Tom Mkhwanazi, W&R SETA CEO, reiterated that for them funding the college was not a difficult task to decide but was in line with their mandate to facilitate education and skills development through implementation of the of the National Skills Development Plan (NSDP) 2030 within the wholesale and retail sector.
Mkhwanazi said lack of training facilities to produce qualified artisans in Limpopo has been identified as a collaborative opportunity which has resulted in W&R SETA partnering with Sekhukhune TVET College to construct a skills centre which would benefit Sekhukhune district and surrounding areas, particularly young people.
Tebogo Kekana, Sekhukhune TVET College CEO, expressed gratitude for the support the college received from DHET and W&R SETA and called on other stakeholders to join hands towards the completion of the centre.
