Limpopo MEC for Education, Polly Boshielo inaugurated all newly elected 2021 School Governing Body (SGB) members in a virtual ceremony on Thursday.
The current SGBs came into office after an election programme that was run from March 1 to April 30, 2021, under the theme: “Reimagining school governance under complex conditions”.
School Governing Body elections take place every three years, with representatives of parents, learners, educators, school support staff and principals making up these structures in all public ordinary and public special schools.
In launching the SGB elections programme on March 09, 2021, Limpopo MEC for Education, Polly Boshielo reminded participants that the preamble of the South African Schools Act of 1996, emphasises amongst other things, the need to uphold the rights of all learners, parents, and educators and promote their acceptance of responsibility for the organization, governance and funding of schools in partnership with the State.
“It is through properly constituted and fully functional School Governing Bodies that partnership between stakeholders and the state as envisaged in the preamble can be realised. So, we expect SGBs that will be accountable to the school community and be occupied with ensuring that governance of schools is managed effectively and efficiently” said Boshielo.
