A 50-year-old security company owner is expected to appear in court after the police uncovered illegally possessed firearms during an intelligence-driven operation in the Sekhukhune District.
The operation, conducted by the Sekhukhune District Tracing and Investigation Team, ran from Friday 18 September 2026 until Saturday morning 19 September 2026, following intelligence that a security company was operating without the necessary firearm licence at two clinics in the Matlelerekeng policing area.
According to Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, Limpopo Provincial Police Spokesperson, the police followed up on the information and raided the company’s premises, where one shotgun was recovered. A male employee was taken in for questioning.
“Further investigation led police to the residence of the security company owner, where a search uncovered an additional shotgun and a firearm with ammunition,” informed Ledwaba.
He added that preliminary police investigations revealed that the security company did not possess the required certificate to possess firearms.
“The police also established that the firearms allegedly belonged to another security company based in Pretoria, from which the owner reportedly rented them for a substantial monthly cash payment. The owner was subsequently arrested and charged with possession of firearms without a licence. The employee was later released after he could not be linked to the offence,” explained Ledwaba.
He said the suspect is scheduled to appear before the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court and investigations are continuing.
Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, welcomed the swift response by police, emphasising that firearms must only be possessed and used in accordance with the law.
