Mayor Mahlase pleased with road development project in Ward 26
SOETVELD/MAMPANA – Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality (MLM) Mayor, Merah Mahlase, has expressed satisfaction over the development of the Soetveld to Mampana Thabeng road project and urged the contractor to speed up its implementation and completion, stressing on the community’s eagerness to benefit economically and socially from the project.
“The community is eagerly awaiting the best legacy project of democracy, which they have long desired. Their hope is that the completion of the project will increase their participation in the local economic and social activities,” expressed Mayor Mahlase.
Thomas Mashabela, MLM spokesperson, informed that the 6.5km access road from Soetveld to Mampana Thabeng villages in Ward 26, funded through the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG), is being upgraded to tar and will soon be coated with an asphalt layer for better mobility and community livelihoods.

Development (ID) division, Namudi Matjomane, Eric Mosoane, Tabane Rankoe, Gift Machaba, project managers and ward councillors, visited the construction site of the development as part of service delivery monitoring efforts.
Mashabela indicated that the municipality plans to implement five key projects through the MIG grant allocation of R 72 858 000 in the current 2024/2025 financial year, comprising two multi-year projects being the access road from Soetveld to Mampana Thabeng and the Kome internal road.
He highlighted that the 6.5km gravel road will be upgraded to a surfaced (asphalt) road with associated stormwater infrastructure including kerbing, V-drains, portal culverts, drainage structures, road marks, and road signage, as well as other construction elements.
“The construction work already done on the project involves the installation of culverts, the roadbed layer, the selected layer, and the stabilization of the sub-base layer, and soon the road will be surfaced with an asphalt layer,” explained Mashabela.
The EXCO proceeded to the Kome Internal Road construction site in Ward 31, where surfacing is up to 90% done with kerbs and V-drains, and the sub-base layer is currently being finalized with the asphalt surfacing initialised.
