Residents unhappy with the newly built Ga Malekane Bridge

With the Minister of Minerals and petroleum resources Gwede Mantashe scheduled to officially handover the newly built Steelpoort Bridge at Ga Malekane, some locals are unhappy with the final project.


Mantashe along with Premier Phophi Ramathuba are scheduled to hand over the new double-lane bridge tomorrow May 8 at Ga Malekane, jik Sports Ground.
The bridge was built next to the historic 1914 single-lane steel bridge.

The project was delivered through a partnership between Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL) and local mines in Sekhukhune.
Residents in Steelpoort said the final design of the new bridge is not what they were promised.” We were shown a modern 3D design prior to the start of the project, not this dull unfinished project.”


The residents also bombarded the Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality’s Facebook page, after the municipality confirmed the event handover.
Kamo Motedi asked,” How do they officially handover a bridge that is not completed?

Another resident, Henny Molapo said, “Maybe is phase one of the project as it looks not completed.” According to RAL, the new steel bridge project was valued at R127 million. It is expected to serve residents of Steelpoort, Burgersfort and surrounding areas.
