Ga Tebeila residents urge FTLM to finish up road project

The wishes of residents from Ga-Tebeila in the Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM) to have a fully completed access road remain a dream, for now.
Back in January 2023, FTLM’s mayor Eddie Maila introduced a contractor to erect a 5.5 kilometres access road and a bridge in the village. The road was supposed to link Ga Tebeila and Mohlaletsi villages.
To this day, the project remains incomplete.
To add salt to the wounds, the contractor is nowhere to be seen, communities revealed to this publication that, “he has vacated site many moons ago.”
This project was scheduled for completion around end of June 2024. Currently, residents claim they are trapped in their yards, because of the below par, shoddy work at the ‘bermuda’ road.
Soil and debris can be seen on the road, the sand left by the contractors is also blocking entrances of some yards. Parts of the road is without tar.
Equipment is also left scattered all over the village. Residents have questioned if the contractor was fully paid for this unfinished project.
“On weekly basis, we always check the site offices, wishing the contractor has returned. In May 2025, the mayor Eddie Maila visited the project, we were hopeful that the project will be resurrected but nothing is being done,” said a community member from the village.
The community members pleaded with the FTLM to come back and complete the project.
FTLM’s communications officer Mahlako Komane said the contract for the access road was terminated.
“Following poor performance by the contractor, the municipality took the decision to terminate the contract for non-performance. This resulted in the municipality starting a process to appoint a new contractor to complete the remaining work. This process is already at an advanced stage.”
Komane said the contractor was not fully paid as the project itself remains incomplete.
“The remaining material cannot be discarded as it will be used to complete the project once a new service provider is appointed.”
