FTLM named the greenest municipality in the Sekhukhune region

BURGERSFORT

The Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM) has been recognized as The Greenest Municipality in the Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM), thanks to its outstanding performance in environmental and waste management services.

The municipality received the award at the Limpopo Green Municipality Awards Giving Ceremony, held on Monday 29 September 2025 at SDM Offices in Bareki Mall, Groblersdal.

The awards, facilitated by the Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET), honours municipalities that demonstrate exceptional performance in four key areas, including waste management, landscaping and beautification, public participation, and leadership.

FTLM Mayor, Cllr Eddie Maila, congratulated the municipality’s waste and environmental unit for their tireless efforts in keeping Fetakgomo Tubatse clean.

“This award is a testament to our commitment to working with communities for a cleaner and healthier environment,” he said.

The municipality will now compete with other municipalities in Limpopo for the prestigious greenest municipality title.

The LEDET awarded the top three SDM municipalities as follows, Fetakgomo-Tubatse Municipality walked away with R50 000-00 after scooping the first position, followed by Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality (MLM) in the second position which walked away with R40 000-00 and Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality (EMLM) obtained the third position and were awarded R25 000-00.

As part of environmental initiatives, Fetakgomo Tubatse has been actively promoting environmental sustainability through various programmes.

In 2021, the municipality hosted the Good Green Deeds campaign, led by Deputy Minister Makhotso Sotyu, which aimed to encourage responsible environmental practices and community engagement.

The municipality has also been involved in tree planting activities, with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment donating 500 trees to be planted in 12 schools.
