Most initiation schools in Limpopo commenced this past weekend. So far, the Limpopo government has reported a smooth running in all the legal schools in the province.
Limpopo MEC for cooperative governance, human settlements and traditional affairs (Coghsta) Basikopo Makamu said this year’s Initiation Season will commence from 23 June 2025 to 21 July 2025 under the theme “A ba ye ba phela,ba boye ba phela”.
Makamu addressed the media last Wednesday to give an update on the province’s readiness during the 2025 Initiation Season Worskhop.
Makamu , Provincial Initiation Coordinating Committee (PICC) , Hosi Chauke and Kgoshi Rammupudu reported that 569 applications were received for both the winter and summer initiation schools. Out of this number, a total of 530 of applications were approved by the PICC comprising of 322 and 208 schools for males and females respectively.
“Our plans for the 2025 initiation season are well on track. As we ready ourselves for the upcoming initiation season, it is important to take note of the track record of the 2024 initiation season,” said Makamu.
The PICC and other stakeholders such as the SAPS , Department of Education, Department of Health and National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) vowed to constantly monitor all legal initiation schools to ensure compliance .
“As the SAPS we uphold the Customary Initiation Act and those that fail to comply with it or operate illegally will be brought to book,” said Brig Isaac Mhlongo of the SAPS.
