The upgrade and maintenance of roads is in full swing in various villages of Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality.

The local municipality, together with the South African National Road Agency Limited (SANRAL), have injected multi-millions of rands to carry-out the roads projects in order to improve service delivery in the area.

Simon Makua, EMLM Spokesperson, said the upgrading of the 5.2km Mokumong to Maratheng Taxi Rank Access Road is currently progressing well at 65% in completion, with contractors busy with mass earthworks, stabilisation and installation of culverts.

The scope of work for the project includes construction of 150mm thick unsterilized sub base layer, construction of 150mm thick stabilised base layer, excavation/box cutting for earthworks, removal of overgrown vegetation/trees at bridges, surfacing the road with 80mm paving blocks, base gravel shoulders where necessary and installation of figure 8C kerbs at selected positions.

“Additionally, part of the project will also include construction of concrete edge beams at selected positions, installation of speed humps at selected positions, installation of pipe culverts for storm-water management, installation of box culverts for storm-water management, construction of concrete side drains due to severe side erosion by high velocity and storm-water flow on the reserve,” he said.

Makua added that the project will also have storm-water control between the cut sections, steep grade sections on the road reserve, construction of 13 bus bays in total, relocation and Installation of fences encroaching with the street alignment and relocation/lowering of water pipelines along the street.

In another project, Makua said the local municipality is currently busy with the upgrade of a 3.5km Malaeneng a Ntwane Access Road and storm water control at Ward of EMLM.

“The road will provide the community with a more reliable access to their homes, schools, emergency services, healthcare services and public transport. The project has created over 33 Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP) job opportunities,” explained Makua.

Furthermore, Makua said EMLM Mayor Cllr David Tladi, together with SANRAL, have recently introduced Nathoo Mbenyane consultant engineers to local traditional leaders for the upgrading of R574 Road Project, which is a 38.8km upgrade form Groblersdal to Morwaneng Village in Monsterlus.
