Limpopo provincial theatre construction project takes off smoothly
POLOKWANE – Limpopo MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, Ernest Rachoene has committed the department’s determination to deliver quality Limpopo provincial theatre infrastructure.
This during his speech at the site visit where the multi-million-rand theatre infrastructure project is being constructed outside Polokwane on 30 July.
The MEC, together with his counterpart for Sports, Arts and Culture, Jerry Maseko, conducted a joint visit to the project, a seven-floor building, which is envisaged for completion in February 2026.
Rachoene said, “We are here today, together with MEC Maseko, and from where I am standing, the project is moving smoothly. I am confident that we are going to deliver on time, and we were very clear in terms of quality that needs to be done here so that we deliver the theatre of top class. Our people have spoken on what they want and as the ANC-led government we are delivering on those services.”
MEC Maseko indicated that client department is looking forward to the first provincial theatre. “We are excited as much as there are challenges of rock-drilling, which is natural, but we are made to understand that here is an intervention they have made to get a specialist to deal with that, and they should finish it by the agreed time frame.
The groundbreaking sod turning ceremony of the construction, which is taking place on the R37 Road outside Polokwane, was made 22 February.
The development marks a significant milestone in the province’s mission to nurturing and showcasing the rich tapestry of artistic talent.
The vibrant and diverse talents of artists in Limpopo, spanning across theatre, film, video, craft, poetry, comedy, opera, choral music and more, have long been calling for a dedicated and contemporary space to showcase their electrifying performances.
The project’s strategic location along the busiest route in Africa promises to draw visitors from around the world, eager to experience the traditional and contemporary artistic performances that Limpopo has to offer.
