Roosenekaal
The police in Roosenekaal outside Groblersdal have arrested a 22-year-old suspect in connection with three attempted murder charges, after he allegedly fired several shots at three men on a farm in Roosenekaal in the afternoon of Friday 8 December 2023.
Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, Limpopo Provincial Police Spokesperson said the suspect, Frederick Benjamin Erasmus, handed himself to the police on Monday morning, 11 December 2023, after he had been on the run since the incident occurred and the firearm that was used during the shooting was also confiscated when the suspect was arrested.
“Erasmus has appeared before the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court and was remanded in custody until 15 January 2024 for formal bail application and further police investigation. He is facing charges of attempted murder,” explained Mashaba.
According to Mashaba, the owner of the firearm, who happens to be the suspect’s girlfriend will be charged with negligent handling of a firearm after it was discovered she left the firearm inside the vehicle.
The arrest emanates after three male victims were attacked by the suspect and his father on their farm on 8 December 2023 at about 14:00.
“It is reported that the three male victims were walking on the farm when they saw the owner’s bakkie driving towards them at a high speed. The owner who was driving with one passenger, alighted from the vehicle and insulted the victims while accusing them of stealing on his farm,” Mashaba said.
He added that the victims allegedly saw him pulling out a firearm and ran towards different directions where shots were allegedly fired in their direction.
“One of the victims reportedly broke his leg while running and called his brother for help. When he arrived, he realised he was badly injured and the two saw the suspect’s bakkie passing without offering any assistance. The victims managed to call the ambulance and the police and where later taken to hospital for treatment,” he said.
Mashaba said further police investigations are underway.
