MOUTSE – Residents of Moutse outside Groblersdal within the Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality accuse Limpopo Department of Health of turning a blind eye on a security company awarded a contract to provide security services at local facilities, which they allege gives preference to outsiders more than local people with regard to employment.
The residents said it seemed the department was not prepared to listen to the grievances of the people of Moutse on the matter.
They said they made several attempts, which were rendered fruitless, to engage with MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba’s office and the department since December last year, 2020, about the security services provider who “wants to lay off the people of Moutse and bring their own brothers and sisters from far North districts” for employment into Moutse local health facilities.
The residents allege that no response or feedback was received from the department. They threaten that it is clear that for the department to take them seriously and take remedial action on the matter, there needs to be riots and strike action.
“That is how other areas like Tafelkop dealt with this company forced upon us by the Limpopo Department of Health. They have given this company a platform to abuse Moutse people and now we are told we must take to the streets and behave thuggishly for them to listen to us,” said Seun Mogotji, a community leader.
Neil Shikhwambana, Limpopo Department of Health Spokesperson, said the department entered into service level agreements with security companies to render services in facilities based on the specifications as per the need of the department.
Shikhwambana said the security companies went out and looked for security personnel commensurate with their needs in those facilities that they were contracted on.
“What community members need to understand is that the department does not employ security officers, neither is it allowed to dictate to security companies on who needs to be employed or be removed,” said Shikhwambana.
He concluded that the law did not permit for that and the security company was on itself an autonomous employer.
