GROBLERSDAL – Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) recently released a statement urging residents of Groblersdal, Motetema and Tafelkop to boil the slightly brownish portable water they got from the taps before consumption.
According to SDM, the state of the portable water, slightly brownish, was because of the high turbidity in the water which came from the Groblersdal Water Treatment Plant. The district municipality said it was rectifying the matter at the time, on 27 December 2020.
However, some of the opposition parties in the SDM council raised serious concerns on the matter and said it should not be taken lightly.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) Sekhukhune said it had always been of the view that the ANC-led district municipality lacked the technical capacity to deliver basic municipal services to the people of Sekhukhune.
Solomon Maila, DA Caucus leader in SDM, said the Infrastructure and Water Services (IWS) department had no engineers and more than half of its staff didn’t have a matric certificate.
Maila said it was clear that the ANC in the region prioritized the employment of incompetent cadres who were connected to the governing elite above the delivery of basic services to which the people are constitutionally entitled.
The Bolsheviks Party of South Africa (BPSA) said it was disappointed that the district municipality was to date, appearing to be failing the community of Tafelkop and Motetema.
Seun Mogotji, BPSA leader, said that was a clear indication of poor workmanship and negligence because the water supply was supposed to be closed before it could have been left to reach communities.
Mogotji said as the BPSA they were appealing to the SDM Executive Mayor, Stanley Ramaila, to probe as to what transpired, hold accountable whoever was responsible and further see to it that such did not happen in the future.
