The Mecklenburg SAPS opened an inquest after an illegal miner was killed when a huge rock fell on him while he was manually mining chrome.
The incident happened on Friday at Ga Manyaka, Maatadi section at about 07:00. The Limpopo SAPS spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, said the police were called and on arrival the body was seen trapped under a massive rock.
“The police search and rescue unit and emergency medical services were summoned to the scene and assisted in retrieving the body. This is after they managed to crush the rock and removed a pile of soil on his body.
” The deceased was identified as Elias Maxon Moyane (23) from Mooihoek Village. The acting provincial commissioner of the SAPS in Limpopo, Maj Gen Jan Scheepers, has warned all community members to desist from engaging in illegal mining as this is against the law and dangerous. Scheepers said in the past months the police seized equipment worth more than R10 million from zama zamas and arrested about 50 illegal miners in Tubatse and surroundings.
