GROBLERSDAL – Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality Mayor, Julia Mathebe, has applauded law enforcement authorities following the arrest of a 41-year-old man who allegedly defrauded South African Revenue Service (SARS) of R1.7 Million.
The suspect, Evans Setshedi, allegedly submitted fraudulent tax returns on behalf of Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality back in 2010.
According to authorities, the money was approved and deposited by SARS into his personal bank account instead of the municipal account.
“During the verification process, it was established that the account number did not belong to the municipality and that the accused used another person’s particulars to open the account,” read a statement from EMLM.
It further read that the bank authorities notified the police and the municipality about the criminal activity and as a result, the accused was arrested.
“The Municipality would like to categorically put it clear that we do not know the accused as one of our employees and would further distance ourselves from any statements suggesting that the he is our employee,” said Mathebe.
She said this breakthrough is viewed as a victory in the war against crime and corruption and they give a huge tap on the shoulder to the HAWKS for arresting the fraudster who defrauded both Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality and SARS monies to the tune of R1.7 Million in tax returns.
