JANE FURSE – Public consultations on the amendment of section 25, which speaks to expropriation of land without compensation and equal distribution, took place in Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality at Jane Furse Comprehensive School on Saturday, 24 October 2020.
Advocate Bongani Bongo, the delegation leader, representatives from the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) and various stakeholders braced the scotching heat to partake in consultation process.
Community members present on the day supported the amendment of the bill and called for government to move at speed in its implementation.
Making submissions, Mpho Matjomae, a community member, said he supported the amendment of the bill and wished for government not to prolong the programme’s implementation process.
Matjomane said African were poor while land remained in the hand of the minority and that needed to be corrected.
Solly Selahle, another community member, said he fully supported the bill’s amendment because there was no prove to that day that all the minority land owners were indeed rightful claimants.
Democratic Alliance Caucus leader in SDM, Solomon Maila, agreed that land needed be given to its rightful owners.
The department indicated that on 20 February 2020, the committee initiated introduced legislation amending section 25 of the constitution.
It informed that Committee Chairperson, Dr Mathole Motshekga, said at the time that it had adopted its revised draft programme for public hearings that were intended to be held across the South Africa.
At the time, Motshekga said that would ensure that people complied with the constitution, something paramount in importance.
The public participation sessions would be rolled out across all districts of the province. In closing remarks, Advocate Bongani Bongo, delegation leader, assured all participants that their submissions would be taken into consideration before the finalization of the amendment of the bill was tabled in parliament processes for adoption and implementation.
