DRIEKOP

Sixteen Zama Zamas were arrested on Friday by the Limpopo SAPS in Driekop. The police also seized equipment worth R10 million.

The members of Provincial Organised Crime (POC) and Tactical Response Team(TRT) assisted by the airwing arrested the suspects for illegal mining during an Intelligence led joint operation.

“The arrest follows a tip off about a group of suspects allegedly mining chrome illegally in this area.

“Police accurately operationalized the information which led to the arrest of the suspects and confiscation of items worth R10 million,” revealed Limpopo SAPS spokesman Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

During the arrest SAPS confiscated three excavators, a Nissan NP 200 bakkie, seven spades and five hammers.

The arrested suspects, aged between 19 and 51, will soon appear before the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court.

The Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo SAPS Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba has commended the Police for tirelessly fighting against illegal mining in the Limpopo province.

Ngoepe said the Police investigations are still continuing in this case.
