MOUTSE – The Bolsheviks Party of South Africa (BPSA) has made claims that the Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) was playing dirty political games with the people of Tambo Village in Dennilton area outside Groblersdal in the Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality.
The BPSA, an opposition party in SDM council, made that claims following a recent incident in the area when the water division of the district municipality and the areas ward 09 councilor, accompanied by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), disconnected pipes and a pressure pump residents had connected to a nearby water source.
Seun Mogotji, BPSA leader, said the action by the SDM water division that day left hundreds of residents frustrated as they depended on that source for access to water.
Mogotji said the party wrote a letter to the district municipality to enquire on the basis of such an act that left people without water.
“The communiqué served to enquire about what informed such action which left the community furious as they have not been consulted regarding the matter. Members of the community there never came across any communication which entails information about destroying the only source of water. The district municipality is requested to present a detailed report on what led to the destruction of the connections to the only source of water in the area,” said Mogotji.
Mogotji said as after the district municipality destroyed the connection, the community pleaded with them to reinstall the connection for people to continue accessing water from the source and assured them safety following lengthy consultation among community members.
“We further engaged the local Induna, Silas Mathebe, and offered to escort them during the reconnection after they destructed the system. Despite all these efforts, the municipality saw if fit to ignore our attempts to resolve the matter amicably and instead chose to involve the police. How grossly incompetent and inconsiderate of the SAPS, as well as the SDM, after six long days of people going without drinking water. The police claim that the area where the machine needs to be installed is a crime scene. How bizarre that their so called crime scene is not barricaded or taped off,” said Mogotji.
Attempts to get comment from SDM were not successful at the time of going to press.
