Tough talks over illegal dumping as it worsens

Residents of Ga Nchabeleng village have expressed their concern over unfinished Nchabeleneg sports ground situated in Mashung, saying the place has now become an illegal dumping site.

According to the members of the community, abandoned site has almost a decade, and as a result, homeless people took advantage of it and turned it into their respective homes.

Nchabeleng community members condemned business owners who dump their unused items in the area.

A rape victim, who preferred not to be named, said alleged nyaope addicts hides stolen property in some of the unfinished building there.

“This is ward 36 under Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality and people do evil things inside this place. People leave used condoms, baby diapers and empty tins of fish here,” she pointed the area.

Other resident who escaped rape said she was robbed of a cell phone worth R10 000 calling the place “deteriorated”

An activist, Mpho Matlala, said abandoned place which was supposed to be developed to allow youth to show off their talent has slowly became a threat to the community.

She said people treated the area without any respect

Mpho said in the evening, one can see how nyaope addicts push garbage and tilt it over into the area without any fear or concern of getting caught.

“This area is littered with anything from household rubbish. It is slowly turning into a dumping site because of nyaope addicts who occupied it,” said Mpho.

“Business owners in the surrounding area dump their garbage at the area as well,” he said

Other residents, described the place as “danger zone” saying during the night is hard to walk pass the place as many young men stood in the corner targeting individuals to rob them of their belongs.
