Sanco demands Mathabatha’s resignation after shacks handover

The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) has called on the Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha to vacate his position.

The organisation said the Limpopo administration under Mathabatha has become a looting machine and no longer has the moral authority to lead the province in terms of service delivery.

This comes after Mathabatha and MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) Basikopo Makamu unveiled 40 temporary dwellings (mikhukhu) at the Talana Hostel in Tzaneen.

Similar structures are currently being erected at Dresden for the Burgersfort’s Ext 10 residents.

“Mathabatha’s administration is now using the Covid-19 pandemic to justify the looting. Sanco is deeply shocked at the launch of shacks outside Tzaneen, by the Premier flacked by  Makamu.  It is not correct for the Premier to distance himself from this scandal after he was captured cutting the ribbon during the launch of the shameful project.  No amount of spinning will ever convince our poor masses and distort their intelligence,” said Sipho Dikgale

Sanco’s spokesperson.

Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo cautioned Makamu, that the 152 temporary dwellings being erected in Burgersfort cannot become a permanent solution.

“The DA is cognisant of the fact that the Housing Development Agency (HDA) took a holistic approach towards the de-densification during the Covid-19 pandemic, but we do not believe that this approach will assist Limpopo in any way to alleviate the housing backlog in Limpopo of 80 000.

“The combined budget allocation for the two projects of R24.3 million to provide temporary solutions at Talana Hostel and Bugersfort Ext 10 is simply unacceptable and the DA will scrutinize the tender processes and allocations of these projects,” said Jacques Smalle, DA Limpopo spokesperson on Coghsta.

The party said the reduction in these budgets will increase further pressure on the housing backlogs in Limpopo as the R114 million forfeited could have been used to build 760 RDP houses.

Mathabatha said the immediate intention and purpose of these housing units is to provide a safer and secure human settlement environment to the residents on a temporary basis during this
period of rapid spread of the coronavirus.

“In the process of preaching social distancing, we found ourselves tied up because there was no way our people would practice that when they live in squalor and mikhukhu. I was mostly touched when we visited Burgersfort town and went behind the beautiful Malls to a place called Ext 10. I wanted people to social distance, but realised it was not possible in that area.”

Mathabatha added that the temporary structures are of the highest quality.

“In the process, we have sought to create employment for the local people.”
