DRIEKOP – A family in Driekop outside Burgersfort lost all belongings to a mysterious fire that broke out in the early hours of Wednesday, 27 May 2020.
The Mahubedu family cried that they were only left with the clothes they were wearing after the devastating fire ravaged the main house.
On Monday, 08 June 2020, when Sekhukhune District Municipality Executive Mayor, Stanley Ramaila and his Executive Committee Members (EXCO) together with ward councilor Rebotile Riba visited the family, they were related the misery of having to wake up in the early hours of that morning to brazing fire that galloped their belongings and destroyed the house that afforded them a home.
“We were asleep when we were woken up by the fire in the early hours of Wednesday morning just before 2am. We called for help from the neighbours to help put out the fire but we couldn’t salvage most valuable inside the house. No one was hurt in the fire,” sobbed Aleta Mohubedu, an unemployed mother.
Mohubedu said none of her two sons were employed and that it was going to be extremely difficult for the family to rebuild the house.
“The fire brigade arrived on time but the fire was too much for them to extinguish immediately. We also everything we had in that fire,” said Aleta.
She said they still could not figure out what may have caused the fire which started when they were asleep that morning.
“We are still struggling to understand what happened. All we are thankful to God for is that no one was hurt and that we are still alive. We have lost everything in the fire,” cried Aleta.
Executive Mayor Ramaila said it was all in the power of God that there have been no casualties from the blaze.
