ATOK– A 33 year-old man who was on Monday, 25 May 2020, arrested for alleged illegal mining in Atok had his case postponed to 01 June 2020 when he appeared before Sekhukhune Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 26 May 2020.
The 33-year-old foreign National, Thabang Mabekeke, who was found in possession of Chrome, had his case postponed for formal bail application.
The suspect was arrested in the early hours of 25 May 2020 at Atok in the Apel policing area for illegal mining during an operation conducted by Members of the Provincial Organized Crime Unit following a tip-off by members of the community.
Police said information was received from community members about the existence of such activities at Bogalatladi Village and quickly, they responded.
Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, Limpopo Provincial Police Spokesperson, said the suspect was allegedly found at the scene and arrested immediately.
Mojapelo added that a truck and two trailers loaded with chrome were then confiscated following the arrest.
“The suspect has already been positively linked with an illegal mining activity in Atok area,” said Mojapelo.
Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba, Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner, commended members for their endless efforts in fighting illegal mining in the province.
Police said it was not clear at that stage where the chrome was destined for. Investigations are ongoing.
