Limpopo health MEC Phophi Ramathuba has welcomed 13 Cuban healthcare workers in the province on May 19. The welcoming event was held at St Maria in Polokwane.
The deployment in Limpopo consists of eight family physicians, one epidemiologist, one biostatistician and three health technologists.
“Being a rural province, we have been struggling primarily with epidemiologists and biostatisticians which are key in guiding us on how best to approach this pandemic.
“Health technology has been another area of deficiency where high-tech equipments may be procured but lack the necessary expertise to monitor and maintain them.”
Ramathuba said the health experts came at the right time.
“We believe they will be able to transfer skills to our professionals and also inspire young people to enrol in these fields. We believe that their presence will significantly boost our public health sector personnel capacity in the fight against this pandemic,” added Ramathuba.
As of Wednesday, Limpopo had 93 cases of Covid-19, 42 recoveries, 48 active cases and three fatalities.
The Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality has so far recorded 34 coronavirus cases and one fatality.
