The Limpopo SAPS are winning the battle
against illegal mining. In the past week, nine illegal miners have been
arrested in the Burgersfort area. On Monday, five men were during a high density operation targeting
the identified areas in and around the Tubatse area where illegal mining
activities are still prevalent.
During this operation, Police recovered a Toyota Hilux bakkie and assortment of digging tools.
“Members of this Unit, followed a tip-off from members of the community about the suspects who were mining chrome illegally at one of the mines in the Mecklenburg policing area
and reacted swiftly. Five suspects aged between 38 and 58, were arrested after they were found in possession of chrome that they had loaded into the bakkie,” said Limpopo SAPS’s spokesman Col Moatshe Ngoepe.
The arrested suspects are expected to appear before the Mecklenburg Magistrates’s Court soon. They are facing charges of illegal mining and possession of suspected stolen chrome.
The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Limpopo Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba, has commended these members for their continuous dedication in ridding off illegal mining activities across the province. The Police investigations are still continuing.
