TSANTSABELA – Emerging farmers in Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality complain that they are not getting help from the Limpopo Department of Rural Development and Land Reform.
According to the farmers several attempts made over the years to engage local authorities on the matter bore no fruit.
Abraham Ngoepe, of Ditswa Mobung Farming Co-operative in Rage village, Tsantsabela outside Marble Hall, said many emerging farmers were deterred from partaking in farming due to lack of sponsorship from government.
Ngoepe said he approached local authorities within his local municipality, Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality, over the years in an attempt to find help with implements to utilise at his farm but was unsuccessful.
Ngoepe said the situation affected him adversely as he had to work the land with his bare hands to make sure his dream of farming was realised.
“It is really hard for us. We hear that there are programmes designed to assist us grow farming in the area but we have not seen any here. We have many people who want to partake in farming but due to lack of support from government, they end up losing hope,” said Ngoepe.
Ngoepe said he produced Sunflower until 2012 and stopped because he had no proper implements to ensure its maximum production.
“Through many promises made by the government to assist small farmers, we had hoped that things would change for the better, but it seems we are only regressing. If we can get assistance from government, we definitely are going to contribute a lot towards food security of the country,” said Ngoepe.
Attempts to get comment from Limpopo Department of Rural Development and Land Reform were not successful at the time of going to press.
