Two zama-zamas were killed when a mixture of rock
and soil collapsed on them while they were mining chrome at Ga-Makgoba village
on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Jeremiah Serota (49) and Freddy Ngwenyama (41), both from Ga-Makgoba.
“The body of one of the illegal miners was partially submerged under the soil. The Rescue and Medical Emergency Services were then summoned to the scene and assisted in retrieving the body. The remaining illegal miner was completely covered by the soil and it took hours before his body could be retrieved,” said Limpopo SAPS spokesperson, Brig Motlafelo Mojapelo.
The SAPS have confirmed that the Malipsdrift SAPS are investigating a case of inquest.
The provincial commissioner of the SAPS in Limpopo, Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba, warned all community members to desist from engaging in illegal mining, as it is against the law and hazardous.
The community members in the area said they are forced to engage in illegal chrome mining due to unemployment.
