Five suspects were arrested and unlicensed firearms and ammunition confiscated on February 7.
The success came during a well-coordinated joint operation conducted by members of the SAPS in Tubatse
The Visible Policing and Crime Prevention members were conducting stop-and-search operations at Bothashoek Cross, when they stopped a Toyota Corolla sedan carrying five occupants and searched it.
In the process, police recovered one AK-47 rifle, three pistols and 11 rounds of ammunition, a bolt cutter, balaclavas and hand gloves.
The preliminary SAPS investigations revealed that the vehicle was reported stolen in Lydenburg, Mpumalanga.
“The five suspects are aged between 22 and 43, and will soon appear before the Praktiseer Magistrate Court on charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, possession of suspected stolen property and possession of house-breaking implements,” said Limpopo SAPS’s Col Moatshe Ngoepe.
He said the recovered firearms and ammunition will still be subjected to further investigations to determine their origin, and any possible involvement in other violent crimes. The police investigation is still ongoing.
