HLOGOTLOU – Five girl learners from Mashego Secondary School in Monsterlus, aged between 15 and 18, were killed in a motor vehicle accident along the R574 Road near Mantrompi Lodge outside Groblersdal on Tuesday afternoon.
According to police the five learners met their untimely death when the driver of an NP200 bakkie they allegedly hitchhiked near a local filling station lost control of the vehicle, which rolled several times, instantly killing them and critically injuring him and his crew. The injured were transported to hospital.
The deceased learners, who were on their way back to their respective homes in Sephaku and Kgaphamadi villages outside Groblersdal, were identified as Beauty Mtshweni, Pearl Rakgalakane both from Sephaku, Lucy Monareng, Chantel Monareng and Karabo Moganeng from Kgaphamadi.
Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, Limpopo Provincial Police Spokesperson, said Hlogotlou police outside Groblersdal opened a case of culpable homicide while police investigations were ongoing.
Polly Boshielo, Limpopo Education MEC, expressed her deepest sorrow and devastation following the fatal accident which tragically claimed lives of the five learners in Hlogotlou Circuit Sekhukhune South District.
The department said in a statement that it learnt that day that four grade 10 and one grade 9 learners met their deaths after hiking a lift back home from writing their Agricultural Science and English examinations.
“We are deeply saddened. Our hearts are heavy and we accordingly send our deepest heartfelt condolences to the families of our learners and the school community. This is a very difficult time for all of us, friends and relatives of these learners. We lack the necessary words at this point in time. We must be united in this time of grief,” said Boshielo.
Sam Makondo, Limpopo Department of Education Spokesperson, said the department’s psychosocial unit had been dispatched to start with the work of providing the necessary trauma counseling for learners, educators, support staff and bereaved families.
