SDM honoured shines during Alfred Nzo Environmental Health Awards

GROBLERSDAL – Sekhukhune District Municipality was honoured as the overall winner of the Best Performing Metropolitan and District Municipality during the Alfred Nzo Environmental Health Awards.

The awards, named after struggle icon and visionary, the late Alfred Baphethuxolo Nzo, who besides dedicating his entire life to the struggle for freedom, was also a pioneer of environmental health.

The awards were introduced in 2002 as part of Minister of Health’s Excellence in Health Care Awards.

Willy Mosoma, SDM Spokesperson, said the district municipality was named the overall winner during a blistering ceremony held on 25 September 2019 and that the mayoral committee, which is the highest decision making body between councils, officially welcomed the awards on 22 October 2019.

Stanley Ramaila, Sekhukhune District Municipality Executive Mayor, upon receiving the good news, said they were deeply touched by the historic achievement.

Ramaila said their journey had not been a smooth sailing. “The norms and standards were introduced in 2015 and the first audit was conducted in 2016. And by then, we scored 45%. In the 2017 audit we scored 80% and in the third audit we scored 94%. And by virtue of getting the highest score, we are rewarded as the Best Performing Metropolitan and District Municipality in rendering municipal health services in the country,” explained Ramaila.

In addition, SDM brought home two certificates, Best Performing Metropolitan District Municipality and Innovation in Environmental Health and an award for the Best Performing Metropolitan District Municipality.
