The killers who allegedly took the life of Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality’s councillor, Thabang Maupa (42) are behind bars.
Kagiso Maroga (34) and Dan Tjie (35) appeared before the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder and attempted murder on Monday October 21.
Maupa was gunned down outside his restaurant in Riba Cross on November 26 last year.
Police said he was attacked after closing his restaurant, which is
situated just next to the main road in the village.
Limpopo police spokesman, Col Moatshe Ngoepe said, “The deceased allegedly arrived at the restaurant to assist his wife to close up. He was accosted by an unknown vehicle, and suddenly someone started firing shots at him.” Ngoepe said.
Maupa died on his way to the local Dilokong Hospital while his wife escaped the attack unscathed.
The Limpopo SAPS said in a statement that since the brutal killing, members of the provincial task and tracking teams assembled to hunt down the killers.
“Their efforts paid off when the two suspects were nabbed on October 18 at Ga Maroga village. The motive for the killing is still being investigated.”
Maupa is known for being a staunch critic of some implicated in the VBS Bank scandal.
He was among a few ANC councillors against the VBS investments.
The case has been postponed to October 28 so the suspects can seek legal representation and for a formal bail application. The suspects were both remanded in custody.
