MARBLE HALL – The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality announced that it would write to the local municipality speaker, Lorraine Modisha, to urgently call a council meeting to debate the permanent appointment of a Municipal Manager (MM), a post which has been vacant for over nine months.
The DA said it was deeply concerned that several projects had been placed on hold due to the delay of filling the crucial position within the local municipality.
According to the party the municipality had been operating without a municipal Manager since December 2018 whilst random officials had been acting in that position, waiting for normal recruitment processes to commence to fill the position.
Flip Jacobs, DA Ephraim Mogale councillor, said to date nothing had been done to fill that vacancy due to African National Congress (ANC) infighting.
Jacobs said the position became vacant after the former MM, Monica Mathebela, was suspended in December 2018 following approval of an illegal investment of over R124 million into the liquidated VBS Mutual Bank.
“Despite her suspension, Mathebela is still smiling all the way to the bank to collect her monthly salary of over R100 000 whilst sitting at home doing nothing. The DA is concerned that the municipality is paying double salaries on the same position instead of filling up the position permanently and finalising disciplinary action against the former MM to cut this unnecessary expenditure,” said Jacobs.
The party added that community projects that were thereof affected by the delay in appointment of the MM in the local municipality included the storm water project in Extension 6, Marble Hall, the Mamphokgo sports facility and the Leeuwfontein sports complex
“It is clear that there is a political interference in the appointment of the MM as well as an abuse of power and contravention of processes by the municipal officials hoping to promote their own cadres and friends, otherwise this position would have been filled timeously and disciplinary action against the suspended MM would have taken place.
Over the past years, we have seen how corruption, maladministration and lack of consequence management has crippled this municipality. This has hampered service delivery to residents severely.
