Polokwane -Former ANC chief whip in Parliament and newly elected chairperson of the land reform ad hoc committee, Dr Mathole Motshekga broke down in tears at a memorial lecture meant to honour the party’s second President Sefako Makgatho at the Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwanee last week.
This is after some party members from the Peter Mokaba Region jeered and hackled the provinces ANC general secretary Soviet Lekganyane, who was on the podium to introduce Motshekga for the lecture.
Delivering the lecture, Motshekga, trying to hold back tears after the commotion said that Limpopo was the last place for such things to happen because it was where the party was strongest.
“The ANC is under siege, it has become infiltrated. Limpopo is where the seed of the ANC and its military wing were planted and Limpopo cannot be the place,” a weeping Motshega said before he could finish his sentence when members broke into song.
After recovering, Motshekga said that it was only Limpopo that could stop what he called the ‘push-back campaign’, referring to those who were opposing President Cyril Ramaphosa.
“This province has to be united. We want to unite and rebuild this organization. If there is no strong ANC in Limpopo there cannot be a stronger ANC anywhere else. We cannot burry the ANC, Limpopo cannot be the burial place of the movement,” he said.
Souring relations in the region started after ANC members from Peter Mokaba Region in two weeks ago called for the reinstatement of two members implicated in the VBS report.
The chairperson of the region, John Mpe, who is at the center of turmoil the condemned the behavior of some of his members but asked for justice to be served.
Mpe, who is also Mayor of the Capricorn District Municipality-that includes Polokwane, led a march to the party’s headquarters in Lithuli House to outline their demands to re-instate two members of the Provincial Executive committee who had been fingered in the VBS report.
According to Mpe, Florence Radzilani was elected as the provincial deputy chairperson of the ANC and Danny Msiza was elected as the provincial treasurer before they were removed from office.
“People of this region are requesting that we have a top five that was elected at the provincial conference. We want the top five to be as it was because the organisation [ANC] has not charged the Deputy Chairperson and the Treasurer,” he said.
He also condemned the party’s chairperson of the integrity commission, George Mashamba, for conspiring and campaigning for the removal of mayors from different districts.
“That committee has no integrity, because the chairperson has shown biasness,” he said.
However, the Andrew Mehlape branch, which is within the Peter Mokaba region, has come out guns blazing in defense of Mashamba.
Branch Secretary, Joel Seabi has called for the A disciplinary action against Mpe.
“The chairperson of the region must go through an internal disciplinary committee to answer why he led a charge in insulting the chairperson of the integrity commission when he said on record that the commission does not have integrity,” said Seabi.
