Double amputee handed a house

When a 65 – year old double leg emputee of Rhulani Village near Tzaneen, took a chance and wrote and faxed a letter to the Limpopo Legislature last year, asking for housing assistance, he did not know he would come to realise it so soon.

Moses Mokoena, who is wheelchair bound, came to realise his dream yesterday when the Limpopo MEC of COGHSTA, Basikopo Makamu, handed over a brand new house and wheelchair  to Mokoena.

The pensioner could not hide his joy as he eventually received a brand new house and a wheelchair accompanied with food parcels, for him and his community, after living in a one room shack for over three decades and narrate the story to the publication.

“I sent a letter to Limpopo Legislature letting them know of my plight. I’m wheelchair bound and can’t really move around in that shack,” the jubilant old man said.

Mokoena”s left leg was emputted in 2000 after some complications. The second one was also emputted in 2006 after health authorities discovered maggots in it.

“I live alone and had nowhere to go. I’m so happy. I did not believe that this would happen to me,” he said.

Speaking at the hand over function COGHSTA MEC Basikopo Makamu said that the initiative was part of the 1955 Congress of the People’s promise that there should be housing, security and comfort.

“When our leaders gathered in Kliptown in 1955, they made a promise that people shall have housing, security and comfort.

“We have gathered here today to hand over a house and a wheelchair to Mr Mokoena. We are also going to hand out food parcels to other families.

“We want to make sure that you don’t say that we come and give you these things during election campaigns.” Said Makamu, speaking strictly in his mother tongue.

He acknowledged all businesses that partnered with the department for all this to be realised.

“We wish to thank the businesses who helped us with building this house and donating the food and wheelchair we will continue working together to make sure our people live comfortably,” Makamu concluded.
