MOUTSE/HLOGOTLOU – Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality (EMLM) extended its helping hand when it donated 180 pairs of school shoes to pupils in Moutse area outside Groblersdal.
The local municipality in partnership with Fleet Horizon and Absa bank donated 60 pairs of school shoes each to destitute learners at Tagane, Sereme and Umthombo Wemfundo primary schools in the area as part of Nelson Mandela Day, celebrated on 18 July every year.
Julia Mathebe, EMLM Mayor, pleaded with parents to support their children in order for them to do well academically and pass their grades.
Mathebe further acknowledged teachers’ hard work and encouraged them to continue doing so for the children to be able to access education and better their lives.
The mayor inspired the pupils that their backgrounds should not determine who they were in life and what they wanted to achieve.
“I once attended a rural school when I was your age. But today, I am heading a municipality with 31 wards. So, I want to tell you all that you will become politicians, engineers, scientists or any other professional, if you take your schooling seriously,” encouraged Mathebe.
She concluded by one of the late Nelson Mandela’s quotes: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
Meanwhile, Sekhukhune District Municipality Executive Mayor, Stanley Ramaila, visited Asiphumele Special School in Zaaiplaas outside Groblersdal on the day to establish a new garden for the facility and helped paint the building.
