Stillborn baby found dumped

MASAKANENG – The community of Masakaneng settlement outside Groblersdal made a shocking discovery recently when they found a body a stillborn baby in nearby shrubs.

The residents, angered by the discovery, immediately started investigations to establish who might be responsible for the gruesome act.

Deejay Ledwaba, a community leader, said the discovery disturbed the entire settlement and residents saw it fit to work closely with the police to bring the perpetrator to book.

“We have never seen anything so disturbing in this area. The person responsible for this must be punished accordingly. We are still traumatized following the incident. Passersby made the shocking discovery last Monday in the nearby bush, not very far from the settlement,” explained Ledwaba.

Ledwaba added that the community worried that other pregnant women may also commit such acts and encouraged those who did not want their babies to consult with relevant authorities for help.

Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, Limpopo Provincial Police Spokesperson, confirmed a case of concealment of birth was opened at the Groblersdal police station following the discovery and a 28 year-old woman was arrested.

The suspect, Nthabiseng Mankge, briefly appeared before the Groblersdal Magistrates Court on Monday and was granted R2000 bail. Her case was postponed to 16 August 2019.
