Double murder convict finally gets heavy sentence

DENNILTON – A 37 year-old man convicted of the double murder of his traffic officer girlfriend and her mother in Dennilton outside Groblersdal has finally been sentenced.

According to police Clement Mashego (37) arrived at the home of his 26 year-old traffic officer girlfriend, Tshepi Kotelo at Malaeneng section around Ntwane village on 27 August 2017 at about 22:00 and confronted both his girlfriend and her 62 year-old mother, Makitla Chileki.

Police said during the confrontation, Mashego shot and killed the two women before he fled the scene.

The accused was tracked down and arrested following the brutal murder and during his arrest police recovered the murder weapon. Preliminary investigations revealed that prior to the murder, Mashego took his friend’s firearm from a safe after he stole the key.

Kotelo was employed in the traffic department division of Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality in Groblersdal.

Constable Maphure Mnamela, Limpopo Provincial Police Spokesperson, said the complex was assigned to detective sergeant Pex Thobejane of the South African Police Services in Motetema.

Mnamela said the dedicated member thoroughly and responsively investigated the case, ensuring Mashego was kept in custody until he was convicted and ultimately sentenced.

On Friday 05 July 2019, the Polokwane High Court sentenced Mashego to five years on count one for theft of firearm, 23 years on count two for murder, 23 years on count three for murder, five years on count four for unlawful possession of an firearm, a year on count five for possession. Count three, four and five will run concurrently with count one. The accused was sentenced to a total of 28 years imprisonment.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (Saps) in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Nnke Ledwaba, applauded the investigating officer on the case for working hard to ensure that justice prevailed.

“The sentence will serve as a deterrent to all those who disrespect the law and take advantage of the vulnerable,” concluded Ledwaba.
