Two arrested for hijacking and kidnapping a local businessman

NEBO – Two suspects, aged 29 and 36 years-old, arrested for hijacking and kidnapping a local businessman in Nebo area outside Groblersdal were both denied bail when they appeared before the Nebo Magistrates Court on Monday.

David Maboro Phetla (29) and August Richard Kabini (36) appeared before the court on charges of kidnapping and carjacking and had their cases postponed to 18 July 2019 for formal bail application.

Constable Maphure Manamela, Limpopo Provincial Police Spokesperson, said the two were arrested by the Nebo police last Thursday shortly after they allegedly hijacked and kidnapped a 37 year-old local businessman from Riverside.

Manamela said their arrested came after members of crime prevention, while on patrol duties at about 13:30 that day, received information about two suspicious vehicles travelling at high speed towards Mogorwane area.

Manamela further said that the members responded quickly and started tracing the vehicles and that immediately after spotting them, a car chase ensued and two suspects from a Ford Ranger abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot whereas, two from the white Golf 6 were arrested.

“The kidnapped victim during this incident was found unharmed inside the Ford Ranger. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects accosted the victim along the road at Riverside, pointed him with firearms and drove with him to Mogorwane village. They then robbed him of his cellphone and cash, informed Manamela.

Police are still tracing the remaining suspects and appeal to anyone with information that can lead to their arrest to contact Warrant Officer Ernest Mogwane on 082 573 4672, the crime stop number 08600 10111 or the nearest police station.
