The Congress of South African Student (COSAS) in Lebowakgomo wants upcoming life orientation textbook to entail masturbation content level in grade four believing that the subject must educate learners more about the advantage and disadvantage of masturbation and sexuality.
This comes after the basic Education department said media reports suggest that grade four learners will learn about masturbation in the new life orientation curriculum are misleading and are a complete misrepresentation of the department’s work.
The department outlined in a statement that the text book which is not yet published will only cover sexuality in the context of childbirth among other curriculum contents.
COSAS regional chairperson Sello Mahladisa said the children are already knows about the masturbation from social media.
He believes that by education learners about sexuality will lead the decline of teenage pregnancy.
National spokesperson of the basic education department Elijah Mhlanga said the new life orientation textbook does not cover masturbation but rather sexual education.
