Union calls for harsh penalties after a miner loss life

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in the province is calling on the department of Mineral Resources to implement harsh penalties on mining managers who keep risking the lives of the miners.
This follows the tragic death of Modikwa platinum mine worker who was fatally injured and died at the mine on 27 March 2019.
Philip Mankge, the NUM east regional secretary, said drastic action should be taken for the mining industry to comply with safety standard.
However the mine said they remain committed to creating a safe working environment for all of their employees and will continue to work towards achieving zero harm.
They said they are providing support and assistance to the family of the deceased and those affected by the incident.
The mine said they will continue to ensure safety for all employees.
The mine also said an investigation, which is being led by the inspector from the department of minerals, the NUM and another union UASA is currently on.
