Mr Bongani Thabethe set the scene at the Mamone Science Centre Class of 2018 Award Ceremony by outlining the project background, particularly from 2015 when the funding by Standard Bank was activated. He said the centre was able to close the cumulative gaps that existed in the education of the black child within the district.
“This centre welcomes everyone from all parts of Sekhukhune, we do not only open our doors for more children – we also established a well refined programme. So far Standard Bank has funded the best of our students to study Actuarial Sciences and each bursary is worth R120 000” Thabethe said
Speaking of the demand for the centre’s intake of more learners Mr Thabethe said their agreement with Standard Bank was to take at least 1000 learners but they were inundated with unrelenting requests from impressed parents.
“Currently the centre hosts 1580 learners in Grade 10 – 12 and I wish to assure parents that their children are well taken care of. To be sharpened for exams and perform exceedingly as they do we put the through master tests and reward the top-20 learners by taking them to all-expenses paid trip to Durban or Cape Town” added Thabethe
He urged learners to take their studies seriously as the best way to relive their parents of a burden to take care of them and their studies.
“If you perform as a learner you are not only advancing yourself but helping your parents because we take over as the centre. 2019 has started in full force and I encourage parents to help us push the learners to the limits of their potential – and you will thank yourselves for allowing your children’s studies to become a focal point” explained Thabethe
He concluded by mentioning that the education circuits impacted by the Mamone Science Centre since 2015 include Ngwaritsi, Lobethal, Glen Cowie, Phokwane, Mmashadi, Schoonoord and Masemola. The project helps learners to catch up with the curricular requirements and to grasp content for Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Accounting and Mathematical Literacy, thus improving performance. Lessons are offered on Saturdays and school vacations include Mathematic, Physical Sciences, Accounting, Maths literacy, Life Sciences and Economics (English and Geography are added to the programme only on school vacations). To ensure comprehensive learner support there are ongoing consultative meetings held with various stakeholders (parents, SGBs, circuit managers, teachers and learners).
