DENNILTON – A suspect was arrested and another fatally wounded during a shootout between police and criminals in Dennilton outside Groblersdal.
Police said it was alleged that on Thursday 10 January 2019 at about 10:00 in the morning, Dennilton Task Team of the South African Police Service received information from members of the community about a suspicious motor vehicle at the local shopping mall.
Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, Limpopo Provincial Police Spokesperson, said the members reacted swiftly and found a BMW with three occupants and approached them.
Ngoepe said the suspects allegedly started shooting at the police who retaliated and during the shootout, one of the suspects managed to jump into one of the police vehicles which was part of the snap operation and sped off while the other suspects fled on feet.
“An intense search operation for the suspects and the police vehicle was then activated until one of the suspects was arrested within a short space of time. The tracing of the remaining suspects continued until one was found. He allegedly started shooting at the police who retaliated and during the process, this suspect was fatally wounded,” explained Ngoepe.
Ngoepe confirmed a firearm, a BMW sedan and the police car were recovered at different locations in the area.
He added that the arrested 32 year-old suspect who was injured during the mayhem would appear before the Dennilton Magistrates Court soon he recovers from hospital.
Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba, expressed appreciation to members of the community who consistently support police in providing quality and reliable information about criminal activities in and around their areas.
Ledwaba said the support they continued to receive from different communities contributed immensely towards the fight against crime.
The search for the remaining suspects and police investigations were ongoing.
