GROBLERSDAL – Opposition political parties in Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality accuses the Mayor, Cllr Julia Mathebe for refusing to sign suspension letters of the recently suspended senior officials. Oppositions claim since the municipality council took a resolution to suspend Municipal Manager Minah maredi and Chief Financial Officer George Maphetho, Mathebe did not sign the suspension letter and appoint acting officials in the positions. Maredi and Maphetho were suspended on their implications in the VBS Mutual Bank saga.Bolsheviks Party of South Africa leader and councillor in Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality Seun Mogotji told the paper that the party wrote a letter to the Minister of Coghta Zweli Mkhize seeking his intervention in the matter. Mogotji said the mayor could not give clear answers on why is she not signing suspension letters and appoint acting officials in the positions. “We are worried that the same suspended officials are still reporting on duty because they were not served with suspension letters. We demand the minister to intervene and pressure the mayor to serve suspension letter to the two individuals. The mayor should honour the council resolution,” he said. Mogotji indicated that the unhappy councillors will take actions against the mayor if the two suspended officials are not officially removed from their duties. “As opposition party in the municipality, we now put it on record that necessary actions be taken against the mayor very soon. We are prepared to stage a sit-in as a form of our dissatisfaction on the matter as it is clear that the mayor is acting against the council’s decisions,” he said. Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality Spokesperson Simon Makua denied that the mayor is refusing to sign suspension letters of the two officials. “It is not true that the mayor is refusing to sign suspension letters. The officials were suspended and were sent home,” he said. Makua slammed claims that Maredi and Maphetho are still performing their duties in the municipality. “They (Maredi and Maphetho) are no longer performing their duties in the municipality and only acting officials took over since the suspensions,” he said.
