MOTETEMA – A 38 year-old businessman in Motetema is livid after Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality (EMLM) allegedly demolished a structure he had built in the area to start a business recently.
The businessman said his problems started when he received a letter from the municipality in November informing him that the structure in question alongside the road would be demolished as it was erected against the laws.
Tshepo Machika said he in August approached the local municipality seeking permission to occupy the space near a bus depot in the area to start a business.
Machika said the local municipality then granted him permission in the form of a letter to occupy the space.
Machika explains: “I was happy to get permission to erect a structure at the space. I then started with the construction of the structure. When the construction was about to get completed, they sent me another latter saying that I had no permission to occupy the space and that the erection of the structure was against the laws of the municipality. I spent money erecting the structure. Recently they sent people to demolish the structure I spent so much money on.”
The businessman said he was worried that the local municipality seemed determined not to provide aspirant business people in the area opportunities.
“I am not the first to occupy a space in the area for business purposes. Why I am the only one who cannot occupy a space and start a business,” worried Machika.
Simon Makua, Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality Spokesperson, said they will investigate into the matter to find out exactly what transpired.
