SAMWU wants senior councillors and officials sacked

MARBLE HALL – The South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) wants charged senior officials in municipalities that invested with VBS Mutual Bank.

The union moved that Mayors, Chief Financial Officers (CFO) and Municipal Managers (MM) in Elias Motsoaledi, Ephraim Mogale and Fetakgomo Tubatse local municipalities be held accountable following the entities’ investments with the controversial bank.

Patrick Aphane, Provincial Secretary, said senior councillors and officials should pay back the money invested with the bank.

Aphane said officials and councillors acted against the Municipal Financial Management Act (MFMA) and they must be charged.

The secretary further said the call for the disciplinary actions against the mayors and senior officials started earlier this year.

“The concerns were made since April but nothing happened. Hope is for necessary actions to be taken against them as the matter is now a concern for the entire South Africa,” he said.

He added that mayors and officials of all affected municipalities should be held accountable including those who withdrew their money before the bank went bankrupt and placed under curatorship by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB).

“That Elias Motsoaledi withdrew all their money before the bank went bankrupt is not an excuse. Fact is they violated the MFMA in investing with the bank. They must be held accountable, the same way as other municipalities,” he said.

Aphane said the money should have been used to deliver services to residents.

“There is currently a service delivery backlog whereas large amounts of money are used for personal gain. Multimillions of rands that should have been used for proper roads infrastructure and water shortages challenge for villages are involved here,” the secretary said.

Aphane added that SAMWU would stage a march to all affected municipalities in the province this month to urge suspensions of the CFOs, MMs and pressure the ANC to suspend Mayors. “Pickets have already started with Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality last month to call on the suspension of the CFO, MM and the Mayor,” Aphane concluded
