Mayor’s Cup 2018 a resounding success



Presided by MEC for Sport Arts and Culture Mme Thandi Moraka, Executive Mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality Cllr Keamotseng Stanely Ramaila and Mayor Minah Bahula, the 2018 Makhuduthamaga Mayor’s Cup final tournament held on Saturday 03 and Sunday 04 November 2018 at the 2010 Legacy Artificial Pitch in Jane Furse. The two-day event did not dismay talent scouts and young athletes of Makhuduthamaga across all sporting codes as it served as an opportunity to interact with their heroes and role models such as PSL’s Baroka FC and Mamelodi Sundowns FC Development Coaches. Among the luminaries in attendance was the President of SAFA Sehukhune Region Mr Lazarus Thokwane and Ngwathe Kgorutle of SANTACO. Department of Arts and Culture was represented by MEC for Sport Arts and Culture Mme Thandi Moraka accompanied by Mme Kgathane Choshane as General Manager for Sports and Recreation, Mr Kola Maila as Spokesperson for the Department and Mr Kodikodi Mabotha as Sekhukhune District’s Senior Manager.


According to Mayor Minah Bahula who addressed the 2000 strong audience during the prize-giving ceremony the tournament 2018 event signify the hard work and quality output of the work that started at ward level.

The best among teams that were selected from ward to cluster level clashed at the prestigious Mayor’s Cup Tournament in netball, soccer (male and female) and cricket sporting codes.

Netball finals were played between Jane Furse Heartbreakers, Makgane Junior Bucks, Mindollar and Marishane City Netball Clubs. During the award ceremony the best among netball finalists went home with uniquely crafted trophies and medals. 4th position was taken by Marishane City, 3rd position – Mindollar, 2nd position – Makgane Junior Bucks and the championship trophy was lifted by Jane Furse Heartbreakers.

Individual awards for the most sterling performance in Netball are Magdeline Riba of Jane Furse Heartbreakers recognised as the best defender, Tshepiso Moela of Mindollar Netball Club for being the best Centre Court Player, Dineo Lefao of Jane Furse Heartbreakers for best shooting skills, Lethabo Molotsi of Mindollar Netball Club was named the player of the tournament and the youngest player of the tournament was Morategi Makgoga of Mindollar Netball Club.

Ladies Football Clubs that played are 50 Starts FC, Lucky Stars FC, Kgotso FC and Vergelegen C FC.  Soccer teams that participated in the final are King Born FC, Matsebeng FC, Kgotso FC and FC Auto.


In the Cricket field the Mini Cricket juniors were played by Kgobise Primary School and Kopanong Primary School. Senior Cricket face-off was between Malegale Cricket Club and Mabodibeng High School.


Top goal scorer of the tournament is ‘Shoes’ who dons jersey number 5 from Matsebong Football Club. Special recognition award for ladies soccer player of the tournament are Freeder Matebane recognised as player of the tournament, Magauta is the leading goal scorer while the impassable Bellina is the goal keeper of the tournament. The youngest player of the tournament is Lethabo Rampeng. Males in the soccer field did not disappoint as Foster Ramushu of King Born FC was named the player of the tournament, Xumani Hlungwane did not disappoint in front of goal posts as the leading goal scorer of the tournament while Annies Sefako was keeping a clean shit on the goal line as the goal keeper of the tournament. The youngest player of the tournament is Moitshego Malatjile.


For ladies soccer the Gold Medal was scooped by 50 Stars FC, second place with Silver medal was Lucky Stars and the third place with a Bronze medal was seized by Kgotso FC.

The referees were also recognised for their sterling work and for making all the matches enjoyable and fairly played. Male soccer championship award placed Kgotso FC at number 3 with Bronze medal, Silver medal went to Matsebeng and the champions of Makhuduthamaga Mayor’s Cup is King Born Football Club, and the congratulations are in order!
