The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo has threatened legal action against Premier Stan Mathabatha should he fail to have officials implicated in the VBS looting scandal held to account.
The party marched to the premier’s offices and handed over a memorandum on Tuesday.
The DA Limpopo leader Jacques Smalle says Mathabatha in his capacity as ANC chair must sack his deputy Florence Radzilani who has been implicated in the Great Bank Heist report.“It’s clear that at this stage and up until today, there was a slow response from the premier and his office.”
Smalle said Mathabatha has failed to suspend all public representatives implicated.
He said their march stems from the very slow action being taken by the provincial government against implicated officials.
He says: “We did see one or two cases where councils did take action but we haven’t actually seen action. The DA has laid charges but it is important that we move those people from office while they can influence financial decision-making within the municipality and distort information and documents. It’s a plea and demand to say to the premier you need to take action.”
FTLM mayor Phokane survives, for now
In Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM) the ANC’s total shutdown march and also an attempt to get rid of mayor Johannes Phokane, the municipal manager (MM) NP Busane , as well as the Chief financial officer failed on Monday 21 October as a strong police presence disturbed the protest, they fired rubber bullets and teargas to chase the protesters.
The police were assisted by local taxi associations who are against the protest.
The associations revealed to Sekhukhune Times that the protests were affecting the local economy badly
The ANC in Tubatse demanded that Phokane and the management of the municipality resign with immediate effect. The FTLM is currently cash strapped. The municipality’s MM revealed on 16 October that they won’t be able to pay for the employees’ travel claims.
