Sekhukhune Boxers combat ready for Limpopo Championships
APEL – Moses Mabotha Civil Hall in Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality was filled to brim with boxing enthusiasts and clubs from all parts of the District. The all-day talent identification session started at 09h00 on Saturday 08 September 2018 with weighing of boxers, then followed a blow-by-blow three-round showdown that narrowed the size of boxers from over 50 to the final 24.
According to the organiser of the District selection event and representative of the Department of Sport Arts and Culture Miss Budjie Phasha the selected boxers will be sharpened to curve their careers in boxing. And that the next level of their journey is to compete at the provincial tournament to be staged in December 2018.
Taking cue from the Department, the leader of Sekhukhune District Boxing Federation Mr Kgaugelo Moshweu Maesela said they are working closely with boxing clubs such as Matšomane Boxing Club from Strekfontein in Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality and Ngwaabe Boxing Club in Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality.
The event was also graced by Sekhukhune’s home-grown champion material Mr Clement Pilusa. Pilusa is the soon-to-be professional boxer to come out of Sekhukhune District and his debut fight will be staged at Thaba Moshate Casino on Saturday 15 September 2018.
Among community members that expressed their support for the rise of boxing in Sekhukhune District was Mr Puleng Mmotla, the Inventor of TUPS Sport and TUPS CITY Multicode Sport Academy. Mmotla said his academy has lined up lots of plans for multiple sporting codes to thrive and gain ground in Sekhukhune District.
“We are animated by failure, discouragement, under-funding and under-recognition of athletes from Sekhukhune across all sporting codes. The perpetual failure of our district in sport front must stop here and now and we have a plan to do just that. As for boxing we will begin by showcasing the selected boxers to the entire community of Sekhukhune through a media launch to take place on Friday 28 September 2018 at De H2O in Maserumule Park. This will be followed by the fundraising gala dinner and tournament on Friday 30 November 2018 at TUPS CITY Sport Precinct in Marulaneng, Jane Furse” added Mmotla
Mmotla concluded by indicating that the tournament on 30 November 2018 is co-organised with Sekhukhune Community Television (SkCTV), Super B Maize Meal, community radio stations in Sekhukhune and Matcom Printers.
The selected boxers to represent Sekhukhune District in the Limpopo Provincial Championships are Matjomane Alek, Maletjie Jeffrey, Tshehla Glen, Fenyane Katlego, Tladi Makutu, Moshaba Tumelo, Matibidi Calvin, Monareng Austin, Pilusa Prince, Sekwati Mofenyi, Mosoma Stanley, Morei Joseph, Tau Sandra, Phetla Dimakatso, Makgoga Tlhologelo, Makanatleng Emmanuel, Kgopane Kgopolo, Utla Karabo, Tshehla Mahlomola, Skhosana Mika, Sekgobela Themba, Mogashoa Cynthia and Dlamini Mpho.
