MOUTSE – Democratic Alliance (DA) Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality ward three joined the rest of the country in Women’s Day celebrations.
The party hosted a women’s commemoration event at Spitspunt village outside Dennilton in Moutse West on Thursday, 09 August 2018.
Youth and women in numbers as well as the elderly graced the celebrations with their attendance that saw women, especially young women given a platform to raise issues directly affecting them on daily basis.
Nora Letsela, DA ward three councillor, said they saw it fit to host the event in a community with serious challenges for women.
Letsela said they robbed in relevant stakeholders to address women on issues of gender based violence, women empowerment as well as alcohol and substance abuse, especially among young women.
“What we wanted to achieve through the event was to encourage women, especially young women to come out and not be afraid of speaking when they are abused. We have realised there is a serious challenge of gender based violence in the area but victims are afraid to come forward and speak about it,” said Letsela.
The councillor said they also sought to encourage women to come together and form cooperatives to ensure their own empowerment.
“We want them to work together and help uplift one another. We them o form Non-Profit Organisations so that they can help build communities for the better. These NPOs will further help in identifying child headed families to see how they can help them. We have realised that some of the girl children dependant on blessers are from such families. We need to help them how we can and fight this blesser trend,” said Letsela.
She further called on young women to ensure that they acquire education to better their lives and stop the life of dependency.
