Villager goes without electricity for years

NGWALEMONG – Like many others, the plight of living without electricity is hitting hard on the life of a villager in Ngwalemong village outside Groblersdal in the Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality.
Selby Malila in the village’s extension said he had been waiting for the electrification of his house since 2010 after he moved to the area in 2009.
Maila complained that he is forced to use paraffin stoves and fire to keep his household running on daily basis.
“We started applying for electricity from Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality since 2010 after we moved here in 2009 but we still have no electricity. I was given a reference number and promised my house will be electrified soon but nothing has happened to date. It comes as a surprise to see houses that came after mine being electrified when my house is still without electricity,” complaint Maila.
The villager said he lodged complaints with the ward 29 committee and councillor, who told him that he must buy poles before his house could be electrified.
He added that he re-applied for electricity in 2014 as he thought there was a problem with his first application.
“I was told my house will soon be electrified. It has been four years now but nothing has still been done. I am not happy about these as I believe electricity is one of the basic needs for residents,” further said Maila.
He added that he took his problem further with the current ward 29 councillor and was promised that his matter would be attended to.
“The ward councillor promised my problem will be attended by council. He promised that he will come back to me with a response and I am still waiting for the response. Some of the residents who applied are continuing to get electricity and not me,” said Maila.
Maila worried that he and his family may be sabotaged because he was affiliated to another party and not the ANC.
“It is very difficult for me to be without electricity,” concluded Maila.
Attempts to get comment from Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality were not successful at the time of going tom press.
